“Best practice” implies that there is only ONE way and this is not always the case, i.e. one size does not fit all. If there was only one best way to do something each company would be doing or trying to do the same thing in the same way and they clearly are not.
Success for a company is also said to be related to doing something different or doing the same thing differently, however this too needs to be critically considered. Doing something different makes sense if it adds value and can be sustained over time. Being different in itself is no benefit.
A single best practice ignores both the internal and external aspects of our businesses. Internally companies operate differently, have different management teams and cultures in place – the result of the history of the company and people. Externally firms operate in different countries, climates and with different regulations to name but a few.
So to expect that there is one universal best practice has to be doubtful.
However it is useful to look at what we are doing relative to others (bench-marking), and trying to have a more realistic evaluation of “Better Practices” that we should be using.
