Sam Hoste speaks at Askham Bryan careers day
Sam Hoste spoke at the Askham Bryan and Yorkshire Agricultural Society careers day introducing students and careers teachers to the range of business opportunities in agriculture.
The BBC's Countryfile presenter and farmer Adam Henson kicked the day off with tremendous enthusiasm. He said: “For youngsters today, agriculture is really exciting. The need in the industry is for those who are hard working, entrepreneurial, innovative and technologically minded. And they have to be business minded too, that’s hugely important."
"It is a really exciting time to be involved in agriculture", said Dr Sam Hoste, "The issues of food, energy and water shortages and climate change all need innovative answers from those involved in agriculture. The importance of a professional career and career progression are recognised at farm level within the pig industry with Certificates of Competence and continuing professioanal development. The higher level skills shortage is recognised by the BBSRC with recent the £12m funding for Advanced Training Partnerships, and by for example, the British Society of Animal Science developing schemes for Continuous Professional Development
The aim of the day was to inspire delegates to encourage their students to go for a careers in agriculture.
The careers day, in its second year was a great success bringing many businesses toegther with local schools, colleges and universities.
