Farming Forestry Improvement Scheme (FFIS) Grants

Defra Launches £20 Million Farming and Forestry Improvement Scheme for England.  Round one opens on 16 November 2011.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 17 January 2012.

The grant rate is up to 40% in non upland areas, and up to 50% in upland areas and the maximum grant allowable per project is £25,000. The minimum grant is £2,500.

The scheme aims to help make businesses more profitable and resilient whilst reducing the impact of farming on the environment.

The scheme will fund new profit-boosting green schemes that:

  • Recover or reduce energy consumption resulting in a reduced farm energy bills & carbon emissions;
  • improve use of slurries and manures leading to improved soil and land management practices;
  • improve animal health and welfare;
  • reduce reliance on mains water by recycling water and harvesting rain water;
  • improve woodland management by processing timber more efficiently.

Nutrient management

Management of stored manure: slurry separator, covers, analysis equipment, GPS equipment,

Slurry application equipment

Energy efficiency

Heat recovery systems: gel coolers, ice builders, heat exchangers

Efficiency devices: vacuum on demand systems, voltage optimizers, computer software, thermal screens for glasshouses

Water resource management

Rain water harvesting: roofing of manure, slurry and middens

Water recycling in horticulture

Animal Health and Welfare

Sheep: weigh crates with electronic segregation systems, turning crates, EID readers, associated computer software

Cattle: cattle crush updates, foot trimming, automatic footbaths and foot-sprays, EID readers, associated computer software, electronic weigh scales

Dairy: rotating brushes, cluster flushing, heat detection, resurfacing of parlour floor, rubber matting, grooving of existing concrete floor, computer software, milk pasteurizer for colostrum to control Johne’s disease

Pigs and Poultry: needleless injectors, percussion stunners, free farrowing systems, replace bell with nipple drinkers, water softeners, interventions to reduce feather pecking

Upland areas

Incinerators and installation of slatted flooring for indoor lambing

Timber processing
